چکیده
15 16 Here we investigate relationships between NDVI, Biomass, and Leaf Area Index (LAI) for 17 six key plant species near Barrow, Alaska. We explore how key plant species differ in 18 biomass, leaf area index (LAI) and how can v e g e t a t i o n spectral indices be used to 19 estimate biomass and LAI for key plant species. A vegetation index (VI) or a spectral 20 vegetation index (SVI) is a quantitative predictor of plant biomass or vegetative vigor, 21 usually formed from combinations of several spectral bands, whose values are added, 22 divided, or multiplied in order to yield a single value that indicates the amount or vigor of 23 vegetation. For six key plant species, NDVI was strongly correlated with biomass (R 2 = 24 0.83) and LAI (R 2 = 0.70) but showed evidence of saturation above a biomass of 100 g/m 2 25 and an LAI of 2 m 2 /m 2 . Extrapolation of a biomass-plant cover model to a multi26 decadal time series of plant cover observations suggested that Carex aquatilis and 27 Eriophorum angustifolium decreased in biomass while Arctophila fulva and Dupontia 28 fisheri increased 1972-2008. 29

Biotic controls over spectral reflectance of arctic tundra vegetation
In this study, seasonal field measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), using a field spectroradiometer, and leaf area index (LAI), using a LI-COR LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer, were compared with above-ground phytomass data to investigate relationships between vegetation properties and spectral indices for four distinct tundra vegetation types at Ivotuk, Alaska (68.49...
متن کاملEstimating Yellow Starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis) Leaf Area Index and Aboveground Biomass with the Use of Hyperspectral Data
Hyperspectral remote-sensed data were obtained via a Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager-II (CASI-II) and used to estimate leaf-area index (LAI) and aboveground biomass of a highly invasive weed species, yellow starthistle (YST). In parallel, 34 ground-based field plots were used to measure aboveground biomass and LAI to develop and validate hyperspectral-based models for estimating these me...
متن کاملAssessment of RapidEye vegetation indices for estimation of leaf area index and biomass in corn and soybean crops
Leaf area index (LAI) and biomass are important indicators of crop development and the availability of this information during the growing season can support farmer decision making processes. This study demonstrates the applicability of RapidEye multi-spectral data for estimation of LAI and biomass of two crop types (corn and soybean) with different canopy structure, leaf structure and photosyn...
متن کاملPost-fire species composition and regeneration of understory vegetation in a boreal forest in central Sweden
Post-fire survival, composition and regeneration of understory species in the boreal forest have shown to be affected by several factors, where consumption of the organic soil layer together with altered soil properties play important parts. There has however also been shown that the pre-fire site characteristics affect the post-fire understory vegetation. This study aimed to investigate the ef...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Heterogeneity of Vegetation Properties among Four Tundra Plant Communities at Ivotuk, Alaska, U.S.A
Intraseasonal patterns of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), leaf area index (LAI), and phytomass were compared for four tundra vegetation types at Ivotuk, Alaska, during summer 1999. The vegetation types included moist acidic tundra (MAT), moist nonacidic tundra (MNT), mossy tussock tundra, and shrub tundra. The seasonal curves of NDVI were similar among the vegetation types but wi...
